Skincare For Allergy Prone Skin

Have you ever had an allergic reaction to a beauty item and your skin flared up, became red, bumpy, inflamed and itchy? Me too, it never used to happen to me, my skin used to be dry and maybe sensitive in the winter but I could deal with it, it was fine. After an event last year (read about it here) my skin was left so incredibly sensitive that even wearing makeup for longer than about 8 hours can cause me to flare up, become itchy, red, bumpy, it’s so uncomfortable. However, I am now fully prepared for whenever this may occur in the future.

You may have read in my latest Beauty Haul post that I had another flare up, I thought I was past it as I hadn’t had one in a good three or so months but I was wrong. I hadn’t changed anything in my skincare routine, but I had been wearing my makeup all day and my skin just didn’t agree with that. I explained in that haul post about how I was recommended a product by Ceryn from Escentual. She came to the rescue and told me to buy the Avéne Recovery Cream so I went and bought it straight away, I bought the rich version hoping for top results. Ceryn then very kindly emailed me the next day asking if I could like to try two other products to help battle my flare up and calm my skin back down. I fully trust her recommendations and was delighted when La Roche-Posay Toleriane Softening Foaming Gel* and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Nuit* turned up in the post. I had a full skincare routine to battle any future allergic reactions.

You may think it odd that I’m writing a skincare review after only using the products for just under two weeks but let me tell you this, they worked wonders. Before when I had a flare up, my skin would be itchy and swollen and so dry for weeks, I didn’t have anything to put on it to help and I didn’t want to chance using anything new incase it made it worse, so I just put up with it. After just two days of using these products my skin was pretty much back to it’s normal self. I was back to wearing makeup and feeling normal again whereas before I couldn’t wear makeup for the entire time as it just aggravated my skin more.

Once I had all my new products, I stopped using anything else and just used these for the 2 weeks. I started out with the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Foaming Gel* and used this to wash my face every night. I still use it now to take my makeup off as it doesn’t irritate my skin at all. It’s free of fragrance, soap, preservatives and parabens and is aimed at normal to combination and intolerant skin. It didn’t cause my skin to get worse, it didn’t sting or leave my face feeling tight and dry, it’s the perfect face wash to use whilst your skin is having a bit of a mare.

For a night cream I used the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Nuit* which is an intense soothing cream to be used every night. I applied this just after I had washed my face with the gel and again, it didn’t irritate it more, leave it feeling dry or tight, it added moisture back into my skin which I need when it’s having a flare up.

Finally, every morning I would use the Avéne Rich Skin Recovery Cream as my day-time moisturiser and it provided me with enough moisture and hydration to last all day. Once my skin calmed down a lot and I was able to wear makeup again, this sat beautifully underneath. My skin feels so soft after using this.

It only took two days for my skin to recover and calm down, like I said above, it used to take weeks to recover fully but even from the first day I saw a noticeable change in my skin the following morning, the redness has died down and the bumps were nowhere near as bad as they were the night before. I was never worried to use these products as I knew they wouldn’t make me worse, it’s the perfect routine for when I have a flare up and I’m so relieved I finally have products that I can rely on and not have to worry if they will make things worse.

Now that my skin is back to normal I use the Embryolisse Lait-Créme Concentré. I bought it prior to my flare-up as I had run out of moisturiser and since I’ve always wanted to try it I decided to give it a go. Turns out it was a very good choice as it can be used for multiple things, a makeup primer, moisturiser, a mask and even baby care which therefore means it’s gentle. Anything that can be used on babies is safe for me. It’s a great product, just like the previous products, this too provides a great amount of moisture throughout the day and leaves my skin feeling soft and supply. Most importantly, it hasn’t irritated my skin.

If you also struggle with sensitive skin that’s prone to allergic reactions I can’t recommend these products enough, they have been brilliant, can’t quite believe just how much they have helped my skin, and so quickly. I can’t thank Ceryn enough for sending me the extra products to give me a complete routine for when disaster strikes, they have worked wonders. If you want to try these products for yourself, they are all available from Escental.

Do you suffer with troublesome skin? Have you tried any of these products?
